The coals in the brazier provided little light in the rapidly darkening room. Rokashay was dimly aware of the two men arguing not 20 feet from him their robed figures silhouetted by the setting sun. A sudden gust of chill wind, coming in through the wide opening in the side of the building beyond the two men, caused his robes to temporarily separate themselves from his sweat drenched body. "Sayeh Oleten the sun is setting you have had your three years. While I admit that you have achieved more than I thought possible with this Orc he is still unable to obtain the still mind. Look at him the simplest of my spells brings him to bay" Standing facing the men Rokashay realised he could not move any part of his body. He could see the spear he had been training with was still in his hands but could not feel it. "The sun has not yet set and his time is not yet up Kel Renha" "Sayeh Olten I will accept that you have tamed his nature and made him respectful of our ways and authority" Rokashay recalled the beatings in his first year, the days without food and water. The enlightenment that order and respect for the Brotherhood is all. "You have taught him to read and write" The hours he had spent with quill and ink and in the library. The scars on his arms and wrists still bore testament to his mistakes in that long teaching "You have taught him the basic disciplines of the passive way. I bow to your skill in achieving all of that with the most stupid Roka I could find." Stupid Roka. He had not known what that meant when he was first brought here. Stupid Roka his fellow apprentices had taunted him. Stupid Orc. "But a wager is a wager. The still mind was the goal and he has not achieved it" Stupid Roka, Ugly Roka how he hated that how he had wanted to smash their faces. Those thoughts had just brought him more beatings and more enlightenment. Order and respect for the Brotherhood is all. He had read books that spoke of human and elven magic that could make you smarter. Ancient relics that could put people in awe of you. How he craved those magics what he wouldn't do. Who he wouldn't kill. As the sun slowly dipped below the horizon and the temperature in the room began to drop Rokashay felt his own temperature rising. Not just the warm glow he sometimes felt when he perfected a new move or bested an opponent but a burning inferno of rage. Stupid Roka. The sun finally disappeared plunging the room into near total darkness as the warm glow of Rokashay's anger spread to his fingertips. He felt the spear in his hand. Who were these humans to bend him to their ways to make him forget who he was? With a bellow of rage the spear flew from his hand. Rokashay could see his target clearly through the darkness as the spear sped on. He saw a change in the pallor of Kel Renha's skin as some magical protection flashed into being. But it was not enough to stop the righteous fury that guided the spear to his heart. The broad blade of the spear cut it's way through Kel Renha's body emerging on the far side and sending him crashing to the floor to lie twitching like a fish on a hook as his lifeblood spread across the marble. Stupid Roka. Sayeh Olten spun toward Rokashay. So fast. So quick with a scalding hand or stick when Rokashay needed enlightenment. Hold the Line! Rokashay remembered the cry of his sergeant as the Heavy cavalry had charged toward them. Hold the Line! He had been but a child then. Sayeh Olten leapt toward Rokashay. The distance the man could cover in one bound was unbelievable. Hold the Line! He was no longer a child. Sayeh Olten came feet first. Rokashay waited as he approached seemingly in slow motion. Hold the Line! Rokashay brought his huge hands up plucking him out of the air before he struck like snatching an apple from a tree. Then down he brought him down across his knee. A final strain of Rokashay's muscles was rewarded with a crack as Sayeh Olten's spine snapped. Rokashay looked down at his teacher. Unable to move Sayeh Olten lay looking up at Rokashay. "I won Rokashay. Renha was wrong you remembered what I taught you. You mastered the still mind" Rokashay placed his hand on either side of Sayeh Olten's head. "No Sayeh I remembered what I am." With a twist Rokashay ripped Sayeh Olten's head from his shoulders. "Orc" * * * Since his escape from the Scarlet Brotherhood Rokashay has been hiding out in Shadowshore.
