Matches/Lighter – in a waterproof container 10. Candles or other fire starter. 11. Whistle 12. Insect repellant/Bear Spray (for critters small and large). 13. Sunscreen/Sunglasses 14. Common Sense. While some of these may not be used on every hike, it is a good guideline for what you will need when going on a hike, but Number 14 is always necessary. This information was found after checking several different sites on the internet. It is an amalgam of information and includes what most of us have heard referred to as the Ten Essentials.
