Send message by voting for Paul Published: September 01. 2007 6:00AM I'd like to say congratulations to Joe Salorino for his letter on U.S. Rep. Ron Paul's run for the White House (Erie Times-News, Aug. 14). Welcome to the club. I've been a Ron Paul supporter since his 1988 run for the executive mansion as a Libertarian. His run helped me leave the Republican Party in 1991 when the first President George Bush raised taxes and banned more guns. I was a fourth-generation party member who left. My Irish immigrant greatgrandparents were so Republican that they named my grandfather Hobart McKinley Kells after the 1896 GOP presidential ticket. Paul, who was a Republican congressman prior to 1988, ran as the Libertarian war horse in that year and collected about a half-million votes. He returned to the GOP because of the unfair ballot-access laws in most states, and in Pennsylvania especially. I recently spoke with a state official who acknowledged the antiquated and discriminatory system that supports major parties. He now has challenged one of these lions in its very lair. If you're tired of the same old, same old from the two-party hacks, and if you want your freedom back, then support Paul's candidacy and change your registration for the primary. Send a message. Vote for Paul in the primary and a third- party candidate in the fall if he doesn't win the GOP nod. It is not too late to send a message that America is the land of freedom, and for the federal government to take its fascist hands off. Ed Tonkin Fairview
